 MIA Centenary Success!

centenary1.jpgLast weekend’s Centenary celebrations were a huge success! Blessed with beautiful weather we welcomed over two hundred guests to Saturday’s Evening Under the Stars and a similar number to the Centenary Mass and Family Roast Picnic. All events went overwhelmingly well, due in no doubt to the hard work of the Centenary Committee, who have been meeting and planning since March 2016. The team have worked tirelessly throughout this time under the passionate leadership of Mary Immaculate’s longest serving teacher, Mrs Leanne Delaney. It is important that I acknowledge each individual member of this team for their tremendous efforts:

  • Centenary Coordinator – Mrs Leanne Delaney
  • Staff members – Mrs Gabrielle Mitchell, Miss Cath Conaghan and Mr Tim Lomas
  • Parents – Mrs Alex Wruck, Mrs Tara Windsor and Mr Savio De Souza (past parent)
  • P & F Executive Team – Mrs Danni Banks, Mrs Penny Geraghty and Mrs Rebecca Morris
  • Parish – Mrs Kay Holmes
I’d also like to acknowledge the efforts of the staff team at Mary Immaculate, who are without doubt, the best staff in Brisbane Catholic Education! They worked tirelessly behind the scenes ensuring everything planned ran smoothly in the months, weeks and days leading up to last weekend. Although most of this work was done ‘behind the scenes’, it was very much acknowledged! I especially thank our teachers for their efforts in leading and connecting learning to our school’s significant milestone. The learning displays reflected their tremendous passion for providing the very best opportunities for our Active Learners. The Hon Kate Jones (Minister for Education and Minister for Tourism, Major Events and the Commonwealth Games), Miss Pam Betts (Executive Director Brisbane Catholic Education) and Mr Michael Kelleher (Area Supervisor Brisbane Catholic Education) visited some of the learning displays, engaging with teachers and guests. They were all very impressed with the quality of learning and interactive displays!

At the Centenary Mass on Sunday, Miss Betts and Mr Michael Kearney (Director Administrative Services BCE) presented the school with a gift to acknowledge the one hundred years of education at Mary Immaculate. Miss Betts presented us with a bronze statue, known as ‘The homeless Jesus’. The bronze sculpture is the work of Canadian Sculptor Timothy Schmalz and will live in the front office foyer located in our prayer space. We are very grateful to have received this beautiful statue in acknowledgement of our Centenary.

Finally, can I thank all parents who gave their time after both events to help with the pack up! ‘Many hands make light work’ and this assistance was tremendously appreciated!
